Okay so these secrets for success aren’t very sexy but they will give your blog the confidence boost it needs! Whether you’re just starting out in the blogging world, or you have been running your beloved blog for ages, the best thing you can do for yourself is be constantly learning what is working, what’s not working, and how to make your blog even better. I came up with 7 tips to give your blog a boost.
1. Make sure your about page is written in the first person.
When I started my first graphic design website I wrote my about page in the third person. I made it seem like a huge company was behind me, when really, it’s just an early twenties college grad sitting at her kitchen table. The internet can be very anonymous. People want to work with actual people, and by writing your about page, whether it be a blog or a small business, in the first person, it gives your potential readers or customers a chance to get to know the real live person they will ultimately be working with.
Now if you actually are running a business with lots of people, then obviously it would be very difficult to write your about page in first person. However, you can include small about sections for each employee.
The bottom line is, don’t try to be someone you’re not. If you’re not a giant company, don’t pretend to be. You’re good enough the way you are.
2. Write more.
Writing doesn’t necessarily mean blogging.Writing is an art and you should treat it that way. Everything gets better with practice and the more you write, the better you’ll get and this will inevitably transfer over to your blogging.
3. Use more images.
A lot of people won’t want to sit there and read a huge chunk of text. Sticking a great photo in your content gives your readers a break from the text. Even though it may only be a few seconds, they’re more likely to keep reading your post if there are images to break it up. Pictures also just make your blog much more visually appealing, and who doesn’t want that ;)
4. Liven up your post titles.
I want to start off by saying, this won’t exactly help your SEO but it will increase the chance of people who come across your article to actually read it. If you want more readers, try making your titles a little more attention grabbing. While yes, your blog posts will sometimes be found on a google search, having a great title and posting it on Facebook or twitter will be more efficient in attracting readers and shares.
5. Regularly read other blogs that inspire you.
I’m NOT saying blatantly copy them because besides the fact that it’s a form of plagiarism, it just makes you look like you can’t come up with your own ideas. (If you couldn’t tell copycats are a huge pet peeve of mine :D you can read about that more here) But what you DO want to do is find a few people who are doing what you want to be doing, analyze what they’ve done and put your own twist on it. Here are 3 blogs that I regularly read for inspiration:
6. Interact with your commenters.
This could get difficult if you’re getting a lot of comments but for as long as you can keep up with it, try and not only respond to the comments, but visit the commenters blog. Maybe send them a tweet, give their blog a shootout on twitter. Its a great way to build relationships with your readers and encourage them to come back and comment even more.
7. Give your blog a makeover.
Don’t you feel great when you buy a new dress or a great pair of shoes? Of course you do, and your blog would love some new stuff too! Whether it be a total blog makeover, a new header, some cool social media icons, the options are endless; treating your blog to something new will give your readers something new to look at and more importantly give you a little boost to keep on updating and writing more great posts.
